The Untold Story of the World’s Leading Environmental Institution: UNEP at Fifty is now open access and is available on the MIT Press platform to read online for free.
The book provides in-depth analysis of the creation of UNEP and its somewhat turbulent history. It explains UNEP’s institutional design as a “programme” rather than an “organization,” and why it was located in Nairobi, the first UN body headquartered in the Global South. The book includes a profile for each of UNEP’s first six Executive Directors and elaborates on why leadership is an important variable.
